Frequently Asked Questions
How are tutors and adult learners connected?
Volunteers are placed based on their interests, geographical location, and schedule availability.
Where do tutors and adult learners meet?
There are over 25 sites currently in use for tutoring in Lake County. These include our Adult Learning and Technology Center, libraries, churches, hospitals, as well as the Lake County Jail. Some tutors work in a CLC Adult Basic Education classroom setting or at one of the Lake County Job Centers. Many of our tutors travel to a location other than their home community because adult learners often rely on public transportation to attend tutoring. No tutoring takes place in the volunteer or adult learner's home.
How often do tutors and adult learners meet?
Generally, meetings are once a week. Given the busy schedules of most tutors and students, flexibility is possible, but consistency is VERY important.
Over what period of time do students and tutors meet?
The length of time a tutor and student continue to meet is dependent upon the student and his/her goals. However, circumstances sometimes prevent even the most enthusiastic student or tutor from continuing. The duration for an adult learner may be a couple months or a few years, although not necessarily with the same tutor for the entire time.
How much does this cost tutors?
There is no charge for the tutor training; however, we do ask for a $10.00 fee to cover the cost of materials. If you need financial assistance please contact a staff person.
