Tutor Qualifications

To became a certified volunteer tutor you must:

▪ Be at least 18 years of age
▪ Have a high school diploma or its equivalent
▪ Have strong basic skills in reading, writing, or math
▪ Be patient, flexible, and enjoy working with diverse populations
▪ Complete a series of pre-service training workshops in either teaching reading or learning to speak English

Trainings are offered 3 times per year—fall, spring, and summer—and are usually held at the College of Lake County in Grayslake or at the Adult Learning and Technology Center in Waukegan.
